AWO was founded in 1970 by a group of women activists who dreamt of a society where gender equality and social justice would reign for all citizens.

AWO has been involved in a long process to strengthen the status of Jordanian women to become equal and effective partners in development. AWO is affiliated to the General Federation of Jordanian Women (GFJW), the General Union of Voluntary Societies (GUVS) and the Recycling Coalition (RC). AWO is a founding member of the Network of the Arab NGOs and a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Arab Women Organization (AWO) is recognized as a leading Jordanian NGO in the struggle to ensure women’s rights. Indeed, Jordanian women NGOs have proved to be a powerful tool for the political, economic, social and cultural empowerment of women. There are several examples of achievements showing that AWO has provided a significant contribution to the integrated movement of Jordanian, Arab and International women NGOs. In Jordan, despite the efforts undertaken in the last two decades, there is still an urgent need to promote the struggle for attaining women’s rights.

AWO is a member of several international, Arab and local organizations and maintains strong ties of cooperation and coordination with several NGOs locally or worldwide, amongst them:

The World Conservation Union ( IUCN)

  Women International Democratic Federation (WIDF).

General Federation of Jordanian Women (GFJW).

General Federation of Arab Women (GFAW).

General Union of voluntary Societies (GUVS).

  Recycling Coalition (RC).

Raising women awareness on their political and economic rights and gender related issues.

Advocating equality and development of women through a strong and determined public opinion that would pressure local and national decision makers to act.

Providing training courses for women and other supportive services to integrate women in the process of development in their local societies.

Providing reproductive health services through a network of Reproductive Health/Family Planning clinics.

Assisting women in underprivileged urban areas, remote villages and refugee camps in training and implementing income-generating projects to enable them to play an active role in the family and become one of the decision makers in their households.

Providing help to Palestinian refugees and displaced families.

Spreading awareness amongst women and the youth of both sexes concerning the importance of protecting the environment.

Operationally, AWO implements advocacy programmes to women and youth of both sexes on gender equality, reproductive health and reproductive rights as well as the preservation of the environment. In addition, AWO provides services to local communities through family planning clinics, illiteracy classes, kindergartens and children’s libraries.

AWO is involved in the implementation of several on-going projects supported by UNFPA, UN Foundation & UNDP. The most recent of which is the establishment of an On-Line Forum to connect around 50 Jordanian grassroots NGOs.
